War and peace

War score, peace terms, partitions, surrender and truces.

Occupation, captured capitals and won battles raise your war score. In the Wars panel, demand occupied provinces, subordination or reparations – the enemy accepts if the score covers it. War exhaustion grows every week and lowers stability.

Partitions

To share the spoils, sign a partition with a country fighting the same enemy, or with the enemy's neighbour, who then joins the war: paint the enemy's provinces for you or for them.

Surrender

An enemy that surrenders unconditionally can be annexed, made a subject, made to give up the occupied land, or give up only the provinces you pick.

A surrender can also cost the loser's co-belligerents the land you hold of theirs: their provinces are listed in the surrender terms next to the loser's own.

Picking provinces

In a peace deal or a surrender, click provinces on the map to add or remove them. Shift-click takes every province of that country the deal can include in one go, and shift-click again removes them all.

Separate peace

You need not make peace with a whole alliance at once. In the Wars panel, offer a separate peace to any enemy country that is not leading the war: it leaves the war, and you may ask for the land of theirs you hold. Their acceptance depends on how the war is going for them and on what you ask. The enemy's allies can offer you the same.

War names

Wars get names the way historians give them: the Russo-Ukrainian War, the Sino-Indian War, the Second Korean War, a War for Kashmir. Recurring names get ordinals.
